Dead Mount Death Play (rank 2.5)

Publisher: Yen Press
Volumes: 6/6+ (Ongoing, Simulpub), In Print
Seinen
Genre: Reverse Isekai, Supernatural, Fighting, Dark Comedy

Summary: The Corpse God was known as a powerful evil necromancer from the world where he came from. But upon his defeat his reincarnation spell activated and he finds himself in the body of a young man named Polka Shinoyama, in Japan, who has just been assassinated. He overpowers the assassin, Misaki, and accidentally kills her, not knowing that death here is permanent. As an apology he revives her as an undead. He then strikes a deal with Misaki’s underworld organization to more or less join them in exchange for living in their corpse disposal building and for information about our world.

The Corpse God just wanted a peaceful life, at least that was the idea behind the reincarnation. But something crazy is going down in Shinjuku, involving a few criminals with almost supernatural abilities, the real Polka Shinoyama’s family, and meanwhile there are a couple cops who investigate supernatural cases on his tail…

Partial Review: This is a new series from the author of the well known Durarara and Baccano light novel series. This is technically Seinen, but it honestly reads a lot like Shounen- since it’s never in doubt who the bad guys are- plus some extra gore and some somewhat gratuitous sex scenes.

The main fun of the series is that Corpse God is the only magic user in our world, and has an unbeatable power. His only limitations are a low concentration of magic that must be stored, and the need to hide his abilities from normal people.

The series only looks to be about halfway done currently, but so far it’s been a great read. The Corpse God is sort of an anti-hero but aside from his cold demeanor, he actually cares a lot about the last wishes of spirits and he would kill anyone who would harm children.  His associates are an organization of assassins and other underworld operations, but in a strange way they are the good guys too. They don’t harm innocents, and aside from the one hit they took on Polka Shinoyama, they mostly only go after other assassins and underworld criminals. They end up fighting some crazy killers who have powerful non-magic abilities. And at stake there is some kind of mystery going on, that they are uncovering clues towards solving.

(Will update this review as new simulpub (published simultaneously in Japan and US online) chapters are released)

Age Rating: Older Teen. Some moderate gore and violence and quite a bit of gratuitous female nudity- lots of boob shots, and a couple gratuitous lesbian sex scenes.
