This Blog’s Purpose and Ranking System Explained (updated: 7/28/20)

Purpose
  • I created this manga review blog due to being frustrated at existing review sites and review databases, particularly I found them very unhelpful in describing what a series is actually about.
  • There is getting to be a massive number of manga series available in English, it's difficult to keep track of them all, and many lesser known and niche interest series have fallen by the wayside.
  • I plan to review every manga published in English with the goal being to help readers find new titles they might not be aware of, that interest them. I also plan to do manwha, manhua and OEL as well, and eventually will get around to doing Novels and Light Novels (but probably not for a while)

What You Will Find Here:
  • Reviews and Ranks for Every Manga: with emphasis on lesser known or obscure titles first, but also popular series and mildly popular series as I have time. I have also tried to include helpful information about each series.
  • Ratings are based on Popular Appeal: The overall rank a manga gets is based on how much most most readers will probably enjoy the title and not my own personal opinion. I also don't generally review the artwork because readers have their own preferences of what they like or dislike. I won't mention the art at all unless the cover art is drastically different from what's inside, or it is really notable in some way.
  • Meta Reviews: I've tried to consult other reviews and include the general highlights and other context in my own review, but this is only really possible for popular series. Less popular series usually have almost no reviews.
  • Spoiler Free Reviews: all reviews don't have spoilers, but I tried to include things that a new reader might want to know. So they may have vague notes on the plot or ending, for example "a main character died and the series wasn't the same afterwards" but I won't tell who died or how or why. Real spoilers are rare but need to be highlighted to read, so you can ignore them if you don't want to know.
  • As Little Opinion as Possible: the goal of these reviews to to minimize my own opinions as much as possible. The concept is to give readers overview information about what's inside the manga so they can make their own decisions. I've left my own opinion in as a sort of benchmark so that reviews can be compared to each other. It's not intended to be the final word or anything like that.
  • Whole Series Reviews: All complete series are reviewed having read the entire thing. Partially released series are noted how far I've read and will be updated from time to time. So series that start slow/poorly get a fair review, and series that start well but can't keep up the quality are all covered.
  • Short Reviews: there's nothing I hate more than reading a whole 3 page essay over a 5 volume series trying to decide whether I want to read a series or not. I have tried to get to the point as much as I can. That being said the more content is in a manga, the review is going to have to be somewhat longer to cover everything.
Ranking System

  • The closer to a top rank (1), the more likely it is most readers will enjoy it. It is not a rating of art or writing skill, although generally the most popular things are well drawn and well written. But there are exceptions. There are also things that are well written and drawn and manage to be incredibly obscure.
  • Rank 1: These are the bestsellers of the manga world. In general I will take my time reviewing all of these because they are all very popular and odds are many readers have read these all already anyway. These are also good starter titles for new manga readers.
  • Rank 2: These are the “don’t miss these” titles of the manga world. They often have some conceits or sub-genre that make them a bit less popular than Rank 1 series but are still generally highly recommended. (Read reviews for more exact recommendations). Many of these titles are also good starters for new manga readers.
  • Rank 2.5: These series stand out a bit more notable than rank 3 titles, but weren’t quite good enough or popular enough to be rank 2.
  • Rank 3: These are solid, enjoyable series in their genre. If you like the premise/style, then these titles are probably something you will enjoy. But readers who are not fans of the genre probably won’t enjoy it.
  • Rank 3.5: These are titles that could have been much better than they were, and suffer from some issues. They're still enjoyable reads but still have problems in a way I know many manga fans won't enjoy. But again, read the specific reviews and decide for yourself.
  • Rank 4: These manga are of niche interest. It doesn't necessary mean bad, just unpopular. It may have major issues and was cancelled or some other big problem with the story. It could be an anime adaptation or manga spin-off that doesn't stand on it's own. It may be a side story or debut work of a popular creator. All in all a lot of these series are recommended only to specific readers with cautionary notes. On the upside, if you’re looking for cheap reads, there are a lot of bargain used titles are in here.
  • Rank 5: Basically almost no one would want to read it, due to massive issues with the title.
