Erica Sakurazawa: The Aromatic Bitters (rank 3.5)

Publisher: Tokyopop
Volumes: 1/2 (Dropped), OOP but not hard to find
Josei
Genre: Romance

Summary: Sayumi (31) and Hide (40) (pronounced Hee-Day btw) are best friends and are both stuck in loveless relationships with their significant others that they can’t quite seem to leave. One day on a vacation Sayumi meets a younger guy, Yusuke, who she falls in love with. Unsure of what to do, she goes to talk to Hiroyuki, her boyfriend, only to find him cheating on her. She moves out to live with Yusuke. Meanwhile, Hide’s husband asks for a divorce and is cheating on her too. She then also meets a younger guy and sparks of love fly.

Review: If there’s one trope I don’t like in these Erica Sakurazawa stories, it’s the whole “well I cheated on you, but you were cheating on me too, so it cancels out”. Anyway, it’s not a bad story, but it seems to strangely endorse Older Women and Younger Men relationships as if it’s a solution to loveless relationships or something.

Unfortunately this series had a second volume that was never released in English. So there’s no ending, but at the same time the story was like ⅔ of the way done and you can kind of guess how it might have ended. It mostly stands on its own.

Recommended: It’s alright. If you don’t like stories where adults act like teenagers, then yeah. Also there is so much cheating as well.

Age Rating: Older Teen
