Erica Sakurazawa: Angel (rank 4)

Publisher: Tokyopop
Volumes 1/1 (Complete), OOP but not hard to find
Shoujo/Josei
Genre: Slice of Life, Romance

Summary: It’s a short story collection about an Angel that never speaks, but shows herself to people in need of help and improves their lives. This includes: a lonely single guy at a bar, a bullied high school girl, and a neglected little girl who's single mother drinks too much.

Review: It’s three somewhat connected short stories where the main characters in each all briefly bump into each other, but otherwise have no connection other than the Angel. As short stories go, they are sweet stories that end happily, but honestly I felt they were kind of bland. It feels like they go on a little too long before they get to the point. I also would have rather each story had been separate from the others instead of this overlapping type narrative.

Recommended: For Josei, only one of these stories (the single guy at the bar) was Romance. The other two are normal stories. All in all they were fine, but nothing really special.

Not Recommended: Even compared to Erica Sakurazawa’s other works in English, I feel like this was one of the weakest.

Other Notes: Angel Nest is technically a sequel to this, but they have nothing in common except the Angel.

Age Rating PG13: Alcoholism, bullying and suicide attempt, and some making out.

Other Works from this mangaka: (from most to least popular):
  • Nothing But Loving You (Shoujo/Josei)
  • Between the Sheets (Yuri/Josei)
  • Angel Nest (Josei)
  • Rules of Love (Josei)
  • Aromatic Bitters (Josei)
