American Comics Recommended for Manga Readers: #1 Demon by Jason Shiga

This is a new regular feature I would like to introduce: American Comics (or other non manga comics) that I think manga readers might enjoy. For the most part I will be avoiding popular comics here (So like, not gonna recommend Sandman, The Walking Dead, Fables etc) but try and highlight more obscure works.

Demon by Jason Shiga (rank 2)

Publisher: First Second
Volumes: 4/4 (Complete), In Print
Shounen (reads like)
Genre: Fighting, Battle of Wits

Summary: Jimmy sits in a motel room and decides to commit suicide… only to wake up like nothing happened. He soon discovers he has an unique ability to take over the nearest body closest to him upon death. Soon the government is after him, all while the bodies are piling up. But there’s an even bigger stake… whoever has this power is effectively immortal, and could even use this power to rule the Earth… forever.

Review: If there’s one manga this reminds me of, it’s Death Note. Between having a simple rule like “Whoever’s name is written in the Notebook dies” only it's "He takes over the body of the person closest to him when he dies" but then there are even more other rules discovered governing the central rule that become important plot points to the story. And much like Death Note’s protagonist, Jimmy doesn’t mind killing innocents to test his powers or further his own ends while he plays an intricate game of wits with the pursuing government agents.

That being said, this is an epic story, spanning over hundreds of years and has an amazing final battle that I wish Death Note had…

Recommended: If you want to read an epic Shounen-like fighting story about the uses and abuses of an unusual power, then you will enjoy this.

Not Recommended: I know the art style is a bit cartoon-y, and not the detailed style that’s popular these days. But give it a try if it doesn’t bother you, the story is great. Also, if you do mind innocent characters dying then this comic has an incredibly high body count. Personally, after a while it felt more like playing a video game or some kind of dark comedy to me though.

Age Rating: Older Teen: fairly violent, but the gore is pretty minimal.
