One Week Friends (rank 3)

Publisher: Yen Press
Volumes: 7/7 (Complete), In Print
Shoujo (reads like)
Genre: Friendship, 4Koma, Romance

Summary: One day a quiet girl, Kaori Fujimiya, catches the eye of Yuki Hase and he decides he wants to get to know her better. He bluntly asks her if she will be his friend, and to his shock she turns him down, saying she can’t be friends with anyone! He persists in asking why and soon discovers her secret: every Monday her memory of all her friends, and only her friends, are forgotten from her memories. He encourages her to keep a diary and they both decide to try this strange “one week at a time” friendship. He hopes to become someone special to her, but how can he when she forgets him every week?

Review: The premise is kind of unbelievable, but if you can accept it, then this is a very sweet story. The story starts a bit slow, but gets steadily better as it goes along. Initially Yuki finds that Kaori seems cold and uninterested in making friends, but truth is she doesn't want other people's feelings to be hurt when she forgets them, so she tries to avoid getting close in the first place. Inside she feels very hurt by her lack of friends and longs to do things like eat lunch with friends, go to karaoke with friends, go shopping with friends, and etc. She's actually a very kind, thoughtful girl, but also very sensitive and easily hurt.

Yuki soon decides that it might help her to introduce her to others who also know her secret, and before they know it, it's not just the two of them together anymore, a fact which Yuki has increasingly mixed feelings about. Eventually he discovers that behind her memory problems, is the remains of a past unresolved trauma.

Ending Mild Spoilers: In the end they never really progress past friendship, but at the same time, all the obstacles to their romance are finally gone.

(Technically this is Shounen but it reads more like Shoujo and also has a very cute art-style.)

Recommended: This story is very sweet and innocent and pure story about enjoying school life to the fullest with your friends. Also, the main emphasis of the story really ended up being more about friendship than romance, so any potential readers should know that. Also, this title has nothing objectionable and is safe to give to younger readers.

Not Recommended: Even though they are supposed to be high school students, the art-style and the story plots really read more like a kids middle school story. So anyway, if you’re hoping for something more sexy like I’’s or Kimagure Orange Road, then this isn’t it. And it's so sweet I felt like I had to go read some horror after reading this to balance it out.

Age Rating: PG: if you mind one scene where the boy falls on the girl and they have an awkward moment.
