Missing: Kamikakushi no Monogatari (rank 3)

Publisher: Tokyopop
Volumes: 3/3 (Complete), OOP but not hard to find
Shounen (reads like)
Supernatural, Ghost Stories

Summary: A gloomy, cynical teen nicknamed “the Lord of Darkness” by his friends in the literature club has always been obsessed with ghost stories. In particular, the Kamikakushi legends of people spirited away by spirits, never to return.

One day he meets a mysterious girl that no one else can see. She warns him if he stays with her, he will be unable to return to his world forever. But he refuses to leave, and instead introduces her to his friends at school, seeming to have some plan in mind. Shortly after, he vanishes and his friends set out to find him and bring him back.

Review: On the good parts of this series, I thought the world building was top notch. It was really interesting to create this explanation where spirits, ghosts, and other legends in our world are actually these formless, shapeless creatures from another dimension that have been at war with humans since the dawn of time. They take the shapes of things in human stories to find those who can see them, and steal them away for some unknown purpose. There's even more to it, if that interested you.

On the downside, I gotta say these set of characters were so generic. It’s honestly kind of hard to tell the Literature Club members apart by personality, because they all act kinda similar and bland. I have read this twice and I can barely remember any of the characters other than the secret agent guy and the girl who likes the “Lord of Darkness”.

Recommended: So if you want to read a sort of meta ghost story that explains all other ghost stories, you might enjoy this. If you’re looking for something more romantic, or spooky, then I don’t know. There’s like a touch of horror and a little bit of romance, but it is really mostly all about the ghost stories.

Other notes: This manga was based on a 15 volume Light Novel series also called Missing that was cancelled, and was also from Tokyopop. The first few light novel volumes are available used. One of these days I’ll check it out and see if it was better than the manga.

Age Rating: PG13 for some mild horror and mild violence
