Heaven’s Design Team (rank 2.5)

Publisher: Kodansha
Volumes: 1-4+ (Ongoing), (Read: 1-4) In Print
Everyone
Genre: Comedy, Animals, Mythical Animals

Summary: The Earth has such an incredible diversity of creatures, from the cute, the clever to the downright bizarre. How might those conversations have gone if they were created by someone? Well, that’s the premise of Heaven’s Design Team. God is an unreasonable client, and a team of Angels tries to turn his difficult or imaginative requests into real animals that can survive and thrive.

This comedy series covers all sorts of unusual adaptations that creatures use to survive, eat, reproduce etc. in the framework of a bunch of Angels who compete and collaborate with each other to produce the most interesting animals. Covered is everything from why otters hold hands, the design of a giraffe, why unicorns can’t exist, how cuttlefish change color, the structure of naked mole rat society, and what makes an animal taste good, and much much more. And many other animals too, from classic favorites from sharks, dolphins, birds, elephants, turtles to downright weird and obscure critters you’ve probably never heard of.

Review: Man this series is pretty funny. If you have an interest in animals, evolution or evolutionary adaptations, then this series is highly entertaining and insightful too. The jokes are a bit hit or miss, but when it was funny, it was hilarious. And occasionally they will try to design mythical creatures as well.

As a general comedy series though, I think someone less familiar with how weird animals can be might spend more time being incredulous that such creatures really exist, than laughing. It’s definitely funnier when you can see the joke coming. But this series also covers many popular animals as well, so at least I think there is something for everyone.

Recommended: Anyone with an interest in how animals work, evolutionary adaptations and similar will get a real kick out of this. I think it also mostly works as a general comedy series too. This series would also be suitable for secretly educational content and doesn’t particularly have anything objectionable for kids. (But you might get some slightly weird questions about animal dicks.)

Not Recommended: If anyone is expecting this series to be religious, it isn’t at all. It’s just the setup for the series.

Age Rating: PG for some discussions of animal reproduction
